This message is quite harmless. Max number is the highest number used in numbering series. This information is saved to .db2 database. There are following situations where you might get this warning:
  • manually assigned numbers exceed the max number
  • db2 file is missing or not up-to-date
Example
If you have three different columns in series C/1, they will get numbers C/1, C/2 and C/3. If there are no other parts in the series, the max number is 3. If you now manually assign position number C/4 for any of the parts and then run a numbering, you will get this "Numbers greater than maximum number found" warning and the log file and numbering history contains following message: Max number conflict: Assembly IDxxxx series:C/1 4 exceeds max number (3). When you next time run the numbering, you no longer get this warning, since the max number is updated for this series.

Max number conflict will also appear in the situation when .db2 file not available. If you are doing anything relating to numbering in model .db2 file should be included in model folder. If the file is missing or is containing old data, you just need to run modified numbering or repair numbering and the file is created or updated.
