Tekla Revit BIM workflow example

Tekla Structures to Autodesk Revit - You have TWO options:

Please note that LOD refers to Level of Development  (LOD)

Option 1: Collaboration: (Very Common) "I want to see if everything fits"

Tekla Structures to Autodesk Revit for Collaboration using Autodesk approved IFC files to 'see if everything fits' but for some reason aren't using Navisworks or TeklaBIMsight (€0) for this purpose.

  1. Please note that GENERAL COLLABORATION is best done on a neutral platform built for that purpose e.g.Autodesk Navisworks or Tekla BIMsight which is dedicated Collaboration software with clashchecking and reporting.
  2. Export from Tekla Structures to Revit using an IFC file (Tekla > Export > IFC) from Tekla Structures
  3. Simply Import into Revit. From Revit 2015 and above, you can Insert > IFC directly in the same way you insert a Link or DWG.
  4. Where there are project co-ordinates, use Site Definition in Revit to locate the inserted Tekla Structures model correctly OR use a manual model insertion point (Right click IFC model after inserting > reposition to project base point)
  5. You can now use BIM to co-ordinate the Structural file with the Architectural / MEP project in Revit.

Option 2: Tekla Structures geometry re-used in Revit drawings/ schedules: 

Autodesk Revit to Tekla Structures for drawing / schedule creation in Revit using plugin links (Tekla creates a TCZIP file which Revit reads)

Tekla Structures users should install:

  • Export to Software (Tekla Structures 19.1 and below ) from the Tekla Warehouse
  • Export to Revit for drawings (Tekla Structures 20.0 and above) from the Tekla Warehouse

Autodesk Revit Architectural / MEP users (Revit 2014 and above) should install:

  • the Import from Tekla Structures Add-In (free) from the Tekla website.


In Tekla Structures (ANY LOD capable software):

  1. Set up model filter / organizer category in Tekla Structures, make sure you only send what the Revit (LOD 300 software) user actually needs (ie probably not rebars, bolts, washers, concrete embeds etc)
  2. Set up building levels and project base point in Export to Software/Revit tool
  3. Export TCZIP file
  4. If you are sending AN UPDATE to an already sent file, the proceedure is the same. Updates of parts are handled by the Revit Import fromTekla Add-In.

In Autodesk Revit (LOD 300 capable software)

  1. Import TCZIP file using Import from Tekla Structures Add-In into a blank 'structural template' project and save.
  2. Link structural project to architectural project or MEP project.
  3. Linked structural project CAN BE UPDATED by reimporting an updated TCZIP at anytime into the structural project. Only changed elements will be updated. Revit ID's will be maintained.

Ok, so what are the benefits to the Revit user of using the Export to Revit / Import from Tekla Structures add-ins?


  • The Autodesk Revit Unique ID on objects is retained between subsequent updates. Information in the Revit project therefore is not lost but is updated as new structural information is imported. This is good for drawing production e.g. drawing overrides such as hatching / linework are maintained between structural updates
  • Autodesk Revit dimensions, Revit materials and Revit notation attached to structural parts therefore are not lost between updates, but are retained and adjusted (eg dimensions change) as the structure changes
  • Autodesk Revit Families are optimized to reduce the number which are used to generate the structural model
  • Autodesk Revit levels and location concepts are supported (eg ground floor, first floor, project base point)
  • Autodesk Revit phases are supported (eg Demolision phase, Construction phase)

Going from Autodesk Revit to Tekla Structures: for BIM collaboration and/or for 3D geometry re-use in design and drawings.

If you wish to take 3D geometry from Autodesk Revit 2014 and above into Tekla Structures, this  done by using the Autodesk approved IFC file format (an intelligent format) or a 3D DWG format (a 'dumb' format)

  1. Export from Revit using the existing Export to IFC command in Revit 2014 or above. Autodesk also have a current project that improves this existing IFC export.
  2. This geometry file can then be used in the BIM co-ordination process as a reference file by Tekla Structures.
  3. Where the situation exists where the reference file has geometry that is actually useful to the Structural team, those parts (correctly dimensioned slabs and columns etc) can be converted to be native Tekla Structures parts and reused and updated at a later time by reimporting the IFC file as part of the time-saving IFC Change Management tools in Tekla Structures. However, please refer to guide below to clarify if the incoming Autodesk Revit model has been modelled with final constructibility as the highest priority.

The Guidance doesn't explain how to set and SAVE the "Project Base Point" and "Specify Coordinates", what to do and which is the meaning of the warnings that could be showed with "Check selection"
