Environment
Not environment-specific

Tekla randomly freezes, crashes, and restarts. Sometimes it gives an error similar to the one below, but most times it suddenly restarts without showing any signs of failure.

The issue did (does) not happen with earlier versions of Tekla.

Newer versions of Tekla have a denser graphics performance.
  • If the issue only happens with a new version, try enabling the High-performance card for Tekla Structures (Add Tekla to it). The image below shows this workflow using a specific interface, but the process will vary depending on your graphics card’s software.

  • Then, under section 3. Specify the settings for this program, go over all the Features and change the Settings to Use the 3D application setting wherever it is available. Hit Apply when you have changed all possible settings.

Do not change any of the other Auto-select or global settings.

Lastly, check that your NVIDIA drivers are up to date. To do so:
  • Go to the Smart scan page to scan and see if anything needs to be installed.
  • Go to the Download drivers' page to see if your specific Nvidia driver needs an upgrade. If so, download/ install.

To see your current settings, you can right-click on the NVIDIA settings icon (in the Show hidden icons section of Windows' taskbar), access the NVIDIA Control panel, and click on System information at the bottom left of the dialog:

Check online if your NVIDIA card has an Experience platform available for download such as GeForce Experience or Quadro Experience to check for updates via an automated scan of your current installation:

For additional information on how to set the graphics card and check for related issues see articles Setting the graphics card to be usedPerformance issues when working with complex items, and Changing mouse settings to avoid crash when zooming.

If you suspect that this may not be the issue, or if after following the steps above you are still experiencing crashes with or without an error, carefully follow the instructions in How to get Tekla Structures crash dump file and send the dmp file to your local support.
