Question:
Is there a limit to the number of characters in a shared folder path in model sharing?
I wanted to start model sharing with a project, but the sharing never worked.

Answer:

In Windows the limitation is 260 and 248 characters for the whole file path and folder path accordingly. This limitation is based on WinAPI, therefore affects the whole software and not only Tekla Structures or Tekla Structures Model Sharing. You can find more information in this article:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/FileIO/naming-a-file

Model sharing has also additional built-in limitations,
  • XS_SHARING_TEMP folder path can be maximum 70 characters long
  • If you have included some files (for example some PDF files) in a very long path in a sub-folder inside the model folder, you might not be able to write out because the destination file path is too long. The maximum length is 125 characters, including the sub-folder name and the actual filename.
  • When trying to share a model, locating on a network drive with very long path, if the sharing is not successful there is a warning about the maximum length, for example: "Model folder path is too long, maximum length is 129"
  • Since Tekla Structures 2016 version you cannot enter more than 40 characters for the model name when creating a new model in the New dialog box.
There might also be troubles because of special characters in file or folder name, so it is always the safest alternative use the very basic characters.
