How to place the Point Cloud at the right location using base point

When importing a Point Cloud it is not always certain what the global coordinates are and if the model-axis are aligned with the Point Cloud-axis.
The point cloud will be converted 1 time and the converted file would be stored at the location defined in the advanced option XS_POINT_CLOUD_CACHE_FOLDER. This means that a Point Cloud can only exist 1 time in a model. When there is an identical Point Cloud Tekla Structures will give you a message that The Point Cloud is already attached to the model.
When you attach a Point Cloud for the first time to a model you can define the location and scalage. For this example, we will set location by Model origin and scale on 1.00.

Go to the Point Cloud in the model and find the point that matched the model’s base point. By using the Set a work plane using 2 points command you can create a starting point and angle of the project in the model. Create a grid to check if the base point and angle are correct.

To define the correct location of the Point Cloud in the model you have to define the Location in the model and Angle to North with base point command.
Create a new base point and use Pick base point location. Select a point on the grid in the Point Cloud that matches the model’s base point. Next, use the Pick North direction command and select a point on the grid that is considered as North.

The next step is to multiply all the generated values by -1. This will create the correct base point which can also be used as project base point.
Tip: You can move the negative value from the XYZ-location to the East, North and Elevation fields. Doing this the project base point is at the same point as the model’s base point.
Detach the Point Cloud and attach it again with location by the new base point. The Point Cloud will be aligned with the model’s base point and the model-axis.
Note: You can attach the Point Cloud by Auto-created Base point. When picking the location you have to combine the XYZ-location with the auto-created East, North, and Elevation.
