Introduction

When you launch Tekla Structures you are prompted to select a role folder.

A role folder contains files and folders such as drawing templates, reports and settings, which are related to the type of work being carried out in Tekla Structures. For example, the Steel Detailer role will not contain a reinforcement bar report, but the Precast Detailer role will.

A role folder can be used by a company to manage their custom files and settings and control which are available to their Tekla Structures users.

A subcontracting draughtsperson will often work for numerous companies in which case the use of multiple role folders can be helpful.

Creating a Role

This article explains how to create a new role which can be selected when you start Tekla Structures.

Step 1

First of all, a new role folder and a new .ini file are required.

To create the .ini file, go to your Tekla Structures environments folder (C:\TeklaStructures\2017\Environments\uk) and copy and paste one of the existing .ini files.

For example "role_Steel_Detailer_inc_CE_Marking.ini" would become "role_Steel_Detailer_inc_CE_Marking - Copy.ini" after copying.

You can then rename the file to something relavent such as your company name - role_Company_Name.ini.

The .ini file which has been copied will still be linked to the old role folder Steel_Detailer_inc_CE_Marking.

To change this, open the .ini file in NotePad and change all of the file paths to the new folder name which you are to create:

Step 2

Now open the role folder "C:\TeklaStructures\2017\Environments\uk\role" and create a new folder called Company_Name.

You can now add custom files and settings into the role folder which will be available for selection when you next start Tekla Structures
