Question:
Is it possible to have a countersunk set screw in my model? I need my bolt without nuts or washers.

Answer:
Yes, there's a way to create countersunk set screws without nuts or washers. By default, bolts in Tekla Structures are created with a nut. However, if the nut is deselected when creating the bolt, the bolt head will not display.

That is why you need to create both a dummy nut and a dummy washer. This can be achieved by adding both a new undefined nut and a washer with the values shown below into the Bolt Catalog.

Example

  1. Open the Bolt Catalog
  2. Create a new undefined nut using the values shown below

The name in the Standard field is important as this will be used to omit the nut and the washer on the bolt.
In this example the names are UNDEF_NUT6 and UNDEF_WASHER6.

  1. Click Add
  2. Now create a new undefined washer using the values as shown below

A new bolt type has to be created in the Bolt Catalog, again in this example an M6 CSK is being defined, this will also define the length of the set screw.
Add two lengths, 25 and 30 long.

  1. Create a new bolt using the values as shown below
  2. Give a Length of 25.00

  1. Click Add
  2. Repeat the process creating a second bolt with a Length of 30.00

The new set screws need to be defined in the Bolt Assembly Catalog using the dummy nuts and washers we created earlier. For ease of location the set screws in this example have been named 8.8CSK-SET-25 and 8.8CSK-SET-30, use this name in the locations indicated and also for the new selected bolt type. All of the washer and nut values can now be defined by selecting the UNDEF_NUT6 and the UNDEF_WASHER6 options.

  1. Open the Bolt Assembly Catalog
  2. Define a new set screw using the values as shown below

  1. Click Add
  2. Repeat the process to define the second set screw 8.8CSK-SET-30

The completed Bolt Catalog and Bolt Assembly Catalog will now allow the new bolt type to be chosen from the Bolt properties Standard drop down menu.

  1. Use Standard drop down to select 8.8CSK-SET-25
  2. Ensure that just a single Nut is selected within the Assembly as shown below

The example shown here is for a countersunk set screw, but this procedure could easily be adapted for cup head bolts or button head screws.
