Frequently asked questions: Tekla Structures Subscription licensing

General

What is the difference between a subscription license and a perpetual license?

The core difference between the two is that a subscription is priced typically on an annual basis and is an on-going subscription that includes support, upgrades, and access to online services.  A perpetual software license is paid up-front.  A yearly maintenance fee then grants access to support and upgrades.

I am an existing customer with a perpetual license - what does Subscription Licensing mean for me? Can I continue to use my perpetual licenses?

Yes, you can continue to use your perpetual licenses as usual.  If you wish you can also purchase new subscription licenses.  To discuss your options further please contact your local Tekla distributor.

Is a product subscription purchased for an individual or for an organization?

Subscription products are associated with your Tekla Online Organizationorganizational account created for a customer organization that has purchased Tekla software licenses

The Tekla Online profile can be connected to the Tekla Online organization in order to grant the user access to the licenses purchased by the organization. The licenses can be, for example, Tekla Model Sharing licenses or Trimble Connect licenses.

.  By default, anybody with a Trimble Identityuser account to sign in to both Trimble and Tekla products and online services

For a Tekla Structures user, Trimble Identity is a single sign-on account which enables the user’s online identity management. Trimble Identity is needed, for example, for Tekla Warehouse, Tekla User Assistance, and Tekla Campus.

that belongs to your organization can use a subscription license.  Using the Tekla Online Admin tooltool that is used in an organization to manage users’ licenses and access rights to Tekla Online services

Each user must have a Trimble Identity. The users can be the organization’s internal or external members.

your administrator can manage access for specific subscription licenses by assigning them to users.

Can I use a subscription license in any country or region?

The answer depends on the subscription license Type you have - there are three Types of license as follows:

  • Standard - Dedicated user licence, cost effective and can be assigned only a few times each year.  It can only be used in the country of purchase*.
  • Flex - Also a user licence but can be assigned manually online as often as required.  Again it can be used only in the country of purchase*.
  • Worldwide - Just like the Flex Licence but can be assigned to users outside the country it was purchased in.

*Note All licenses need to be used in accordance with our EULA and Terms and Conditions. Standard and Flex licenses are only available for use in the region they have been purchased. Standard and Flex licenses can be used temporarily outside of their territory for a period of 2 months (for example in the case of a project). A company would need to purchase the Worldwide option if the end user is going to be working overseas full time or if they are going to be working overseas for greater than 2 months.

I see that all the subscription license types are assigned to users.  What does this mean and how is it done?

All the subscription license types are "named" licenses.  This means that they are always assigned to a specific user (a person) in your company.  So, after you purchase a subscription license, to start using it you assign it to a member of your organization.  Note that this counts as one assignment.

For a different person in your company to use the license, it must be reassigned to them.  For full guidance on what this means and how to do it please see this Article Reassigning your subscription licenses.

Note that the Standard license type can be assigned to a user four times per calendar year.  From the above explanation, you will see that this means it can be reassigned a further three times after the assignment to the first user..

How can a user identify whether they are using a Perpetual/Maintenance license or a new Subscription license?

When a user launches Tekla Structures they are presented with a list of license options. The User initially selects the license server they would prefer to use - the online license server which has the Subscription licenses or the company’s on premise license server which has the Perpetual and Maintenance. After selecting the license server they wish to use the user can then select from the list of license options available to them. This list allows them to select the configuration, license type and source organisation where the license is being supplied. The company’s Administrator has the ability to decide which licenses are available to each user using the Tekla Online Admin Tool for the Subscription licenses or using the options settings on the Flexnet server.

Trimble Identity is used to generate the Tekla Online profile. Users sign in using the Trimble Identity.

. The ones ending in Maintenance are to allow you access to our support and services while the others are used to allow software use.

Tekla Online Licensing

All subscription licenses use Tekla Online Licensing which is a 'cloud' licensing service that enables you to use your products anywhere you have access to the internet.  So it is ideal for remote working for example.

What is Tekla online licensing?

Tekla online licensing is an online digital rights service which is used by Tekla’s desktop applications and online services to verify that you are entitled to use them.

How do I configure Tekla Structures to use Tekla online licensing?

Launch Tekla Structures then, in the setup dialog, click on "Change license server" then select "Use your Tekla online license".

What is a Trimble Identity?

Trimble Identity (Trimble ID) is an online service which provides single sign-on access for Trimble and Tekla online servicesservices provided for the users of Tekla products through different online channels

For Tekla Structures users Tekla Online services include Tekla Campus, Tekla User Assistance, and Tekla Warehouse, for example.

.

How do I create a Trimble Identity?

To create a Trimble Identity, go to https://account.tekla.com, click Log in, and click Create New Trimble ID.

What is a Tekla online organization?

To use subscription licenses, your Trimble Identity must be associated with an organization.  Associating your identity with an organization allows you to use the Tekla software and services granted to that organization.

How do I join my company's Tekla online organization?

Contact the Tekla Online administrator of your company, or visit the My organization page of your Tekla Online Profile and use the Send request option.

Why do I have to sign in when I start a Tekla application?

The online license is associated with your Trimble Identity.  When you sign in to the applicationpart of Tekla Structures functionality that is developed in order to extend the capability of Tekla Structures but that is not included in the Tekla Structures installation

, you use one license seat.  When you close the application, the license seat is released and can be assigned to another user in your organization should you wish to do this.

Can I use my subscriptions offline?

Yes, you can use a Subscription license offline for a period of 72 hours. When you close the Tekla Structures application, you will be presented with an Exit dialogue box which has an option "Keep this license on this device".  By default this option is enabled.  This will keep the license locally on the device for the next 72 hours.  During this time, Tekla Structures will show that it is running in offline mode by displaying the stopwatch icon and the message 'Disconnected from server' with the remaining offline time. This is shown even if the computer is online.  It is not possible to specify a longer offline time.

Note - in a way this is similar in concept to 'borrowing' an on premise license to use remotely for the Flexnet licensing system.  However, in the case of Online Licensing you are simply 'taking' the license offline for the defined period (during which the license seat is not available to others).  Online licensing already allows you to work anywhere with internet access remote from your office/ company network.

What happens if my internet connection is not working or I lose my internet connection while I am working?

People can lose internet connection for a number of reasons and as a result someone may temporarily lose access to the online license server. This is classified as unintentional loss of access to the online license server. If a user experiences unintentional loss while working in Tekla Structures, they will be notified with floating display messages informing them of the amount of offline time remaining for the session. This will allow a Tekla Structures user to save their work while still continuing to access Tekla Structures until the unintentional offline time limit expires. When the unintentional offline time limit expires, Tekla Structures will display a Dialogue box informing the user that they need to save their work and close the product.

What is the Tekla Online Admin Tool?

The Tekla Online Admin Tool is an online service which allows Tekla online administrators to view and manage the users and licenses in their Tekla online organization. The administrators can also see who is currently using your company’s licenses. To use this tool, you must be assigned administrator rights within your Tekla online organization.

How can I find out which users in my organization are currently using a license?

Using the Tekla Online Admin Tool, Tekla online administrators can view which users are currently using each license.

Can I use previous Tekla Structures versions with a subscription license?

Yes you can, back to Tekla Structures version 2019 (but no earlier)*

*Note the following limitations however:

  • Previous versions (2020/2019i/2019) will not recognise the new 2021 Carbon, Graphite and Diamond configurations, for these you will see Project Viewer, Rebar Detailing and Full configurations respectively.
  • Tekla Structures 2021 and Tekla Structures 2020/2019i/2019 cannot be opened on the same computer at the same time with the same online license
    • Tekla Structures 2021 can be opened multiple times on the same computer at the same time - if Tekla Structures 2020/2019i/2019 is opened, that license/configuration will not be available
    • Tekla Structures 2020, 2019i and 2019 can be opened multiple times on the same computer at the same time - If Tekla Structures 2021 is opened, that license/configuration will be listed as “All in use”.
    • Workaround - Close Tekla Structures 2021 without keeping the license on the device before starting Tekla Structures 2020/2019i/2019, or vice versa. Sign-out is not necessary.

How do I setup a previous version to use Tekla Online Licensing?

The process is the same as given above for Tekla Structures for version 2019 and newer; launch Tekla Structures then, in the setup dialog, click on "Change license server" then select "Use your Tekla online license".

Can I use subscription licenses and my existing perpetual licenses at the same time?

Yes, the licensing is based on the User that is trying to access the products. It is not based on the computer or machine identification. When launching Tekla Structures the user will be presented with an option to select the type of license they want to use for that session.

How does the subscription online licensing work with Citrix and other virtual desktop technologies?

Online licensing works in Citrix and other virtual desktop environments, including cloud hosted virtual machines. The main requirement is that there are no restrictions to the Trimble Identity and Tekla Online services. See additional information in the article Requirements for connecting to Tekla Online services.
