Question:
When is the reference cache rewritten? It would be important to understand how to prevent this, as recreating the cache can take a really long time.

Answer:
The reference cache might be written in the following situations:

  • When clicking Refresh all in the reference model list (21.0 or older) or Refresh button in the side pane (21.1 ->).
  • After changing the XS_REFERENCE_CACHE location and re-opening the model.

In older versions (21.1 or previous) reference cache might be written in these situations also:

  • When the model is opened and there are visible reference models (if the reference model is hidden, it does not trigger the rewriting of the cache).
  • Clicking Modify in the Reference Model Properties dialog box.
  • Opening a drawing where the reference model is visible, if it is hidden in the model side.

Not all these situations lead to reloading the reference file from scratch. If the cache file is up-to-date, Tekla Structures just uses that. The cache file is valid if :

  • its size is the same as before and
  • its modification timestamp is the same as before and
  • the cache file has been created with the same Tekla Structures version (or the versions are compatible).
We do not currently compare the actual contents of the file.
