Save Grid To File

1. Purpose and description

The Save Gridmodeling aid that represents a three-dimensional complex of intersecting grid planes or intersecting grid planes and curved grid surfaces

The grid is defined by coordinates in 3D space. It is shown two-dimensionally on the view plane by dash-and-dot lines. A grid can be rectangular or radial.

It is possible to have more than one grid in a model. For example, a large-scale grid for the entire structure, and smaller grids for some detailed sections.

It is also possible to show grids and grid line labels in drawings, and to modify how they are shown in the drawings.

To File
extension allows the user to save and load grid(s) that can't be saved in the out-of-the-box grid dialog box.  This includes directly modified grids and individually added grid lines.

3. Installation

To install the applicationpart of Tekla Structures functionality that is developed in order to extend the capability of Tekla Structures but that is not included in the Tekla Structures installation

  1. Make sure Tekla Structures is closed.
  2. Install the appropriate installation package that you can download from the Tekla Warehouse.
  3. Open Tekla Structures
  4. Before version 2016: A new toolbar icon which will launch the tool should now be visible when a model is opened. For 2016 version and newer: a new thumbnail in the Applications and components side pane will appear.

4.  Usage

  1. Launch the tool by clicking icon/thumbnail.

  2. Highlight the grid(s) that should be saved for future use and then click Save Grid Data.  (If no grid is selected then all the grids in the model will be caputred and stored in the xml file)
  3. A Save As dialog box will appear that will allow you to name and save the file in the desired location.   Name the xml file and Click Save.  (The default location is in the attributes folder of the current modelmodel that is active in Tekla Structures

The current model can be a single-user model, a shared model or a working model.

  4. Click Create Grid From File to load into the model a previously saved grid.
  5. Browse to and highlight the xml file and click Open.
  6. The grid will then be inserted into the model.

5.  Additional Information

  1. You can select single or multiple grid systems (or by default all grid systems in the model) and save the grid planesingle horizontal or vertical plane

Grid planes form a rectangular grid or, together with curved grid surfaces, a radial grid.

data.  If you need the systems to remain independent then you should save each system individually and re-create from the saved files.
  2. Due to an ommission in 2019 Final, 2019 SP1 is needed for this application to work. For details on the ommission see
