Question:

Our enterprise licenses are located in the headquarters. Our office is 5000 km away from it and has difficulties in reaching the license server. We only get a Windows error message saying that "Tekla Structures is not responding".

Answer:

It is likely that the Internet service operator is not providing a good enough connection, so there is not much we can do on the Tekla Structures side.

Based on our experience there are some options to try out:

  • Test if you really have a connection to the license server:
    • Make sure that Windows Telnet Client is turned on in Windows Features (here is the instruction) and then go to Windows command prompt and type "telnet <SERVER_NAME> port_number" (or "telnet SERVER_IP_ADDRESS  port_number") to check if you actually have a connection to the license server. Port_number is the TCP/IP port number defined in the SERVER line in the tekla.lic file. You should receive just a blank screen. (press Enter to return)
  • Tekla Structures is always checking all license configurations from the server. To speed things up even a bit, use the bypass.ini file (read example usage here). So a user asks immediately for one specific license configuration and role, and opens one specific model.
  • If you have a connection to the license server (1st bullet point) but bypass.ini does not help (2nd bullet point), try setting FLEXLM_TIMEOUT (see this link) (This is defined in the teklastructures.ini file, default location in the C:\Program Files\Tekla Structures\<VERSION_NUMBER>\nt\bin\ folder).

Note! The value is in microseconds and at the time of writing the maximum value is 2 147 483 647. (If needed, you can check this maximum value from Flexera instructions on the license server ...\TeklaStructures\License\Server\fnp_LicAdmin.pdf)
