1   Common to all US Roles

1.1   Environment ini files

The following variables were added to, modified, or deleted from the USIMP and USMET environment ini files:

Added 
  • XS_PART_POSITION_TO_EDGE_NEAREST_TO_NEIGHBOR – this variable was set to TRUE in order to get shear plates to automatically be dimensioned to the critical connecting side.
  • XS_EXCLUDED_PARTS_IN_ORIENTATIONAL_NUMBERINGprocess of assigning position numbers to parts, cast units, assemblies, or reinforcement

    In Tekla Structures, the position numbers assigned in the numbering are shown in marks and templates, for example.

    – this variable was set to *ANCHOR* *ANGLE* *PLATE(1) part that represents a flat structure

    (1) In some contexts, for example in analysis, the term plate object may be used to refer to plates.

    (2) plate that represents a steel structure

    (2) Plate is mainly used as a connection piece or as a floor plate.

    * *NUT* *STUDbolt element that represents a metal rod or pin that is used to transfer loads

    Studs and other bolt elements are listed in the bolt catalog.

    A stud can be secured with two or more nuts and have threading at both ends, or it can be welded to steel parts, for example.

    A stud is part of the bolt assembly.

    * so that loose assemblies that have a main part(1) part that exists in a building object and that determines the position number for the assembly or cast unit and the direction of assembly or cast unit drawings

    (1) Main part can be an assembly main part or a cast unit main part.

  • XS_DSTV_CHANGE_AK_BLOCK_RADIUS_SIGN – set to TRUE

These two DSTV settings change the arc direction on cuts for the top and back faces of parts in CNCoperation of a machine tool with a computer controlling the manufacturing process

The terms numerical control and NC refer to the method used prior to computer numerical control. However, the abbreviation NC is often used in the term NC file.

1.2   Catalogs

Profile Catalog

Added 

The user attribute MAX_TWIN_SEARCH_DIST was added to the US profile catalogcatalog that displays profiles and information on the profiles

In addition to the available profiles in the respective Tekla Structures environment, the user can add fixed or parametric user-defined profiles to the profile catalog. It is also possible to import profiles to the profile catalog.

When you create beams so that they are located very close to each other Tekla Structures may consider them as a twin profilepart that represents two identical parts mirrored in relation to their position

Twin profile can be separated into two individual parts, after which it is no longer a twin profile.

. Use this user attribute to prevent this from happening.

Fixed
  • P-3606 & P-3615 composite decking profiles – these profiles contained graphical errors and did not display correctly. They have been fixed. USimp only.
  • Heavy Hex Nut profiles – the inside holesmall hollow open throughout a part or assembly that is usually used for fastening parts with bolts or other such objects

    Hole is created in the same way as bolts and hole properties are defined in the bolt properties.

    diameters of these profiles were off by a small amount. They have been fixed.
  • Washer profiles – the inside hole diameters of these profiles were off by a small amount. They have been fixed.
  • Jumbo HSS profiles – these profile have been updated to have the correct weight, cross-sectional area, etc. USimp only

Warehouse

The introduction of the Tekla Warehouseservice for collaboration and for storing and sharing Tekla Structures content

In Tekla Warehouse the content items are stored in collections. Tekla Warehouse includes the Tekla Warehouse Service and the Tekla Warehouse web site.

Tekla Warehouse is one of the Tekla online services.

https://warehouse.tekla.com/ brings a new way to bring content into your projects. Here is a list of some new packages that we have included in the United States collection.

  • Aluminum profiles - If you need Aluminum shapes, download this package. Package includes C, I, and L profiles. Available in imperial only.
  • Galvanized bolts - If you need Galvanized bolts download this package.
    • Imperial Package includes galvanized bolts in the following designations; A307 GALV, A325N GALV, A325T GALV, A325SC GALV, A325X GALV, A490N GALV, A490SC GALV and A490X GALV.
    • Metric package contains A325M GALV, A325MT GALV and A490M GALV.
  • New TC bolts - If you need Tension Control bolts using the new designations F1852 or F2280, download this package. Package includes; F1852, F1852SC, F1852X, F1852-DTI, F1852X-DTI, F2280, F2280SC, F2280X, F2280-DTI and F2280X-DTI. Available in imperial only.

Included in previous versions of US environments, the following profiles/bolts were removed from the out of the box cataloguser interface for displaying or modifying information in categorized lists

  • FabTrol Reports - for users of non-US environments so they don’t have to install a US environment to get this files

Material Catalog

The following grades have been added to the Steel section of the Material catalogcatalog that displays material grades and information on them

By default, the material catalog contains standard, environment-specific materials. The user can add, modify, and delete material grades.

  • A1003-GR.50

The Yield & Ultimate Strength values have been updated for many of the Steel material grades.
A1085 grade has been designated as the default material for HSS profiles.

1.3   User-Defined Attributes

There are a few changes made to the objects.inp file used by all roles.
The Load bearing variable has been relocated to the Parameters tab for both Steel and Concrete parts. This variable used to be found on the IFCfile format commonly used in BIM that facilitates software interoperability

IFC is an open specification developed by the IAI (International Alliance for Interoperability).

Model can be exported into an IFC file.

The IFC export tab has been added to both the Cast in place cast unit and Precast cast unit dialogs.

The Control Numberuser-defined attribute of an assembly or a cast unit that identifies the assembly or cast unit main part

A control number does not affect numbering.

Control numbers are running numbers.

The Design Groupgroup of physical parts that Tekla Structures uses when it searches for optimal profiles for steel parts and optimal reinforcement for concrete parts

Mark
attribute was changed from a unique attribute to a regular attribute. This will allow this mark to be copied when parts are copied in the model.

1.4   Macros

Help Files

Remember there is a help file for Macros available in the US environments. This help file can be opened from inside the Macros dialog by running the === OPEN MACROsaved series of actions that includes instructions for a program

Macros are located in the applications and components catalog. They are recorded or created manually and stored as .cs file in a folder defined with the advanced option XS_MACRO_DIRECTORY.

Macros can, for example, be used for creating drawings or reports.

Macros are sometimes used to run an application.

1.5   Reports

One new Drawing listlist of drawings that provides information about the drawings in a particular model and that is used for searching, managing, and printing the drawings

In the drawing list, the user can, for example, search, open, update, freeze, lock, and delete drawings. The drawing list can also be used to display the associations between the drawings and the parts in the model.

Drawing list is used in Tekla Structures until version 2018. See document manager.

  • 550 Drawing list – updated report to work with all drawing types and use the user-defined attributeobject property created by the user in order to widen the range of predefined object properties

    User-defined attributes are used when the predefined object properties are not sufficient but more properties are needed. For example, comment, locked, and erection status are user-defined attributes.

    Plot Date.
  • 555 Drawing list status – this NEW report will provide you the status of any or all of the drawings in the drawing list. Find out if the drawing has been Issued, is Frozen, is Locked, or has Changed and why.

1.6   Templates

Settings

The following contentattributes files have been updated.

  • Contentattributes_global.lst – updated to support drawing status attributes. Modified old Logical Building Area attributes to be Location Breakdown Structurelogical subdivision of the model into work units based on the location of the model objects

    In Organizer, location breakdown structure forms a hierarchical tree-structure and it can be used to divide the model into projects, sites, buildings, sections and floors.

Help Files

The Tekla Inc Custom Componentcomponent that the user creates and uses for creating model objects whose composition the user can modify as a group

help file’s HOME page has been updated to show which custom components have been UPDATED and if there are any NEW ones. See the Role chapters for more information about the new or updated Custom Components.

2   Steel Detailing     

2.1   Steel Detailing Role

The Steel Detailing Role was created to include only the items needed to use Tekla
Structures for Steel Detailing and Steel Fabrication. This Role combines the contents of
the environment folders with the contents of the us_roles\steel folders. The
Role_Steel_Detailing.ini file located in the usimp (usmet) folder runs after the
env_US_imperial.ini (env_US_metric.ini) file is run. 

The following variables were modified in this role’s ini file:

  • XS_USE_OLD_DRAWING_CREATION_SETTINGS – this variable is set to TRUE which utilizes the old drawing functionality and dialog boxes.

2.2   Model Template

The Steel Detailing role’s model templatemodel which is used as a basis for creating new models

The user can save a model including all its elements, such as object properties, certain settings, parts, and components, in a model template.

has been updated to include the new, updated and fixed Custom Components mentioned in section 2.5 below.

2.3   Modeling

All attributes which load HSS profiles have been updated to use the new industry material standard of A1085.

2.4   Component Catalog

Published Attributes

Many components are suitable for use in different situations. Through localization we have saved many attributes inside components for different scenarios. These attributes can be used by opening up the components dialog, loading the attribute, and applying it in your model. This can be done much simpler and more user-friendly by utilizing the Publish Attribute featurepart of Tekla Structures functionality that is maintained and owned by Trimble Solutions and that is included in the Tekla Structures installation

. We have organized many of the component attributes that we have localized into a Publish Attributes collection and folder.


     
These published attributes have a unique icon which includes the component number in the left top corner. The picture in the thumbnail shows an example of what the attribute does in a similar framing condition. To use these attributes you do NOT have to open up the component dialog, load the attribute and apply it to the model. Instead you simply just click the icon and apply it to your framing condition. It’s that simple. Publish attributes are preloaded with the corresponding attribute so they are much easier to use.
The following 6 attributes have been added to the Publish Attribute collection.

  • 127 – DoubleCut_InsideStringer
  • 127 – DoubleCut_OutsideStringer
  • 1038 – With_Studs
  • 1039 – With_Studs
  • 1043 – Base_Condition_Left
  • 1043 – Base_Condition_Right

Of course these attributes are just a starting point. Once you apply them in the model you can open up the dialog and adjust the connection as needed. The main point of organizing these into a collection/folder is to illustrate all the different framing conditions that these components can be utilized. 

2.5   Custom Components

There are a few new Custom Components available in version 21.0 and a few others that have been enhanced.

New Custom Components

Column Tiers

This new custom component can be used to quickly model in up to 5 tiers of columns. It contains options to control each column tier, each splice connection, a pier, a footing and reinforcement.

Knee Brace


This new custom component can be used to model in a single-angle or double-angle knee brace at a beam to column intersection.

X Angle Brace – Beam to Beam
X Angle Brace – Bottom

 
These new custom components are similar to the existing chevron components and can be used to quickly model in X braces using angle profiles.

These new custom components are similar to the existing chevron components and can be used to quickly model in X braces using HSS or WF profiles.

Bay Filler Seam v2

This custom component has been updated to support sloping conditions, plus a few other options have been added. See this components help file for more details.

Joist Panel Opening v2

 

These custom components have been updated to now automatically calculate the number of panel openings required based on the panel point locations picked.

Rail Fittingadjustment of a part end

This custom component has been updated to include a new option to controlling whether the elbow has a rounded or sharp corner.

Sag Rod v3

 

This custom component has been updated to include a new option to override the nuts_and_washers.dat file and define the nut and washer profiles separately. Also added in an extra length field.

Fixed Custom Components

Dogbone

The cuts forming the dogbone cuts somehow became unparalleled to the beam. This has been fixed.

Weld Prep Scallop

The width of the cuts were not wide enough to cut the all the rounded section of wide flange shapes. This has been fixed.

2.6   Reports

Updated
  • 350   Stud List – updated report so that it can also be run from selected Assemblies.
  • 450   FabTrol Assembly Parts List-v30 – updated to include a switch in Title3. When Title3 equals “EDI” then the EDI nomenclature is used instead of the profile label.

2.7   Drawings

Assembly Drawings

Changed the direction of the left section marks for both Column_with_BOM and USColumn attributes so the bottom base platecomponent object that represents a plate welded to a column base

Base plates are used to distribute the concentrated load of the column over a wider area.

2.8   Organizer

The Organizer user interface has been improved in v21. We have updated all Object Browsertool in Organizer used to inquire, view, and report model information based on selected model objects

You can now create Organizer filters and use them in the Organizer in lieu of using Selection filters. The following filters have been created for use in the Steel Detailing role.

  • Steel_Secondary

Other filters (like Beam, Column, etc) were not recreated because we are now using the automatic categories based on Name to separate the assemblies and parts into groups.

Removed (.SObjGrp)

Since the Organizer has its own filters, the following filters are no longer needed and have been removed from the Steel Detailing role.

  • Organizer_BoltFilter
  • Organizer_ComponentFilter
  • Organizer_WeldFilter

3   Engineering     

3.1   Engineering Role

The Engineering Role was created to include items an engineer needs to use Tekla Structures. This Role combines the contents of the environment folders with the contents of the us_roles\engineering folders. The Role_Engineering.ini file, located in the usimp (usmet) folder, runs after the env_US_imperial.ini (env_US_metric.ini) file is run.

The following variables were added in this role’s ini file:

3.2   Model Templates 

The Engineering role’s model templates have been updated to include the new, updated and fixed Custom Components mentioned in section 3.5 below.

 

3.3   Modeling

Many small additions, modifications, deletions were made to attributes on the modeling side. One new additions is the Object Representationrepresentation of a model object or an object group in a model view, such a representation being based on the color and transparency settings applied to the model object or the object group

3.4   User-defined Attributes

Two NEW tabs have been added to the objects.inp file used by the Engineering role.
The Fastrak Import and Tekla Structural Designer tabs have been added to support the interoperability with these two products.

The Design Propertiesproperties that concern physical part design

Design properties vary depending on the analysis application that is used.

Design properties may be applied to the entire model or to individual objects.

For example, buckling length is a design property.

Design Properties are used to populate the schedules on the new Foundation_Plan.

3.5   Custom Components

There are a few new Custom Components available in this role in version 21.0 and a few others that have been enhanced.

Drawing Filters

The filters used in the GA Drawingdrawing that is created from one or more model views and that shows information needed to understand the general arrangement of structural elements on a project

General arrangement drawings show how parts, assemblies, cast units, or pour objects are located in a building.

and Drawing Viewview that includes selected model objects or an area in the model, that is represented in a drawing

A drawing view is a container for model and drawing objects.

A drawing can include several drawing views, which usually are two-dimensional views, plane views, to the model.

Examples of drawing views in Tekla Structures include main views, section views, single-part views, and 3D views.

Object Level Settings are now the same as the model Selection Filters with the same name when possible.

Part Attributes

All Part attributes have been renamed with more descriptive file names and are now saved to the Drawing, View, and Part level attributes.

Part Mark Attributes

All Part Markmark that includes a set of selected property elements related to a part

Part marks are made use of, for example, when identifying constructions, when giving information about welding, when giving information about assemblies to a workshop, when giving information about how parts should be connected to each other, and when creating bills of quantities.

In the US, the term piece mark is used to refer to position number.

Bolt Mark Attributes

All Bolt Markmark that includes a set of selected property elements related to a bolt or bolt group

3.7   Organizer

Filters

You can now create Organizer filters and use them in the Organizer in lieu of using Selection filters. The following filters have been created for use in the Steel Detailing role.

  • Brick_Wallplate that represents a structure such as a wall or roof panel

    In Tekla Structures, a panel is created by picking two or more points.

    In cast-in-place concrete the term wall refers to a concept similar to panel.

    / Cipcast unit type where the concrete is formed, poured, and cured in its final position

  • Cip_Beam / Cip_Column / Cip_Foundation / Cip_Pier

    Grout is flowing concrete that hardens after application.

4   Precast Detailing     

4.1   Precast Detailing Role

The Precast Detailing Role was created to include only the items needs to use Tekla Structures for Precast Detailing. This Role combines the contents of the environment folders with the contents of the us_roles\precast folders. The Role_Precast_Detailing.ini file located in the usimp (usmet) folder runs after the env_US_imperial.ini (env_US_metric.ini) file is run.

4.2   Model Template

The Precast Detailing role’s model templates have been updated to include the new, updated and fixed Custom Components mentioned in section 4.4 below
 

4.3   User-defined Attributes

The Rebar Release Info tab in the objects.inp file was renamed to Release Info.

Five new attributes have been added to this tab.

4.4   Custom Components

There are a few updated Custom Components available in this role in version 21.0.

You can now create Organizer filters and use them in the Organizer in lieu of using Selection filters. The following filters have been created for use in the Precast Detailing role.

  • Precast_All
  • Precast_Hardware
  • Precast_Insert
  • Reinforcing_Bar

Other filters (like Beam, Column, etc) were not recreated because we are now using the automatic categories based on Name to separate the assemblies and parts into groups.

Removed (.SObjGrp)

Since the Organizer has its own filters, the following filters are no longer needed and have been removed from the Precast Detailing role.

  • Organizer_ComponentFilter
  • Organizer_Rebar

5   Cast In Place     

5.1   Cast In Place Role

The Cast In Place Role was created to include only the items needs to use Tekla Structures for Cast In Place projects. This Role combines the contents of the environment folders with the contents of the us_roles\castinplace folders. The Role_Cast_In_Place.ini file located in the usimp (usmet) folder runs after the env_US_imperial.ini (env_US_metric.ini) file is run.

The following variables were modified in this role’s ini file:

  • XS_ENABLE_POUR_MANAGEMENT – this variable was turn on in v21

5.2   Model Template

The Cast In Place role’s model templates have been updated to include the new, updated and fixed Custom Components mentioned in section 5.4 below
 

5.3   User-defined Attributes

The Rebar Release Info tab in the objects.inp file was renamed to Release Info.

Five new attributes have been added to this tab.

  • Bar Type
  • Rebar Coating
  • Release Name
  • Release Guid
  • Bundle

5.4   Custom Components

There is a few new Custom Component available in version 21.0.

New

CIP Embedbuilding object that represents an object that is to be cast into a concrete structure and that is used to connect structures or as an aid when constructing a structure

For example, a cast-in socket is an embed that is placed in concrete structures to allow parts to be bolted together on site. In Tekla Structures, embeds are modeled as steel sub-assemblies that are inside a concrete nested assembly.

These custom components have been updated to include an option to create a nut and washer on the underside of the baseplate.

Pile Caps

These custom components have been updated to include design property user-defined attribute fields. 

5.5   Organizer

The Organizer user interface has been improved in v21. We have updated all Object Browser and Category attributes to support these changes. See the release notes for more information about changes to the Organizer.
