Tekla Structures 2017i comes with many important improvements in many features such as drawing speed, partial profile representationthe way that the information included in a model is represented visually
, adjustable mark and text background, mark rotation, GA plan view level marks, automatic snapshots, section viewdrawing view that shows a selected area as a cross section
A section view can be created of the parts in a drawing view. A section view can be created manually or automatically.

Spiral beams can be concrete spiral beams or steel spiral beams. They can be used to create spiral staircases, complex architectural structures, and concrete parking ramps, for example.
Spiral beam can rise from the work plane or be flat. If the spiral beam rises, the total rise is defined between the start and the end point.

Some drawing templates were very slow to open. Earlier, the cancelling message box at drawing opening just showed that objects where rendered. Now the message box also shows when tables are being updated, and you can cancel the opening faster.

General arrangement drawings show how parts, assemblies, cast units, or pour objects are located in a building.

Symbol with partial profile: Symbol length and location now adjustable
You can now adjust the length and location of the part symbol when you use the part representation option Symbol with partial profile in drawing part properties on drawing, view and object level:
- Adjust the length in the Length box. The default value is 1000 mm.
- Adjust the location in the Offset from middle point box. The default value is 0 mm.

Adjustable mark and text background
You can now select whether to use opaque or transparent background in
- dimension marks
- associative notes
- drawing texts
- marks (for parts, bolts, neighbor parts, levels, connections, reinforcement, neighbor reinforcement, surface treatmentbuilding object that represents finishing of a part
The term surface treatment is used in concrete detailing. For concrete parts surface treatment includes surface mixes, tiles, and flat finishes, such as troweling and sandblasting.
The term surface finish is used in steel detailing. For steel parts surface finishes include fire-proofing and unpainted areas.

The new setting Background mask is located in the properties dialog box of texts, marks and notes. The option Opaque hides the area of the drawing that is covered by the mark or text, whereas the option Transparent shows the drawing content in the mark or text background so that drawing linework is visible. The new setting is available for all drawing types in drawing, view, and object level properties.

Part marks are made use of, for example, when identifying constructions, when giving information about welding, when giving information about assemblies to a workshop, when giving information about how parts should be connected to each other, and when creating bills of quantities.
In the US, the term piece mark is used to refer to position number.

Limitation: The background mask does not work for weld marks.
You can now rotate marks in all drawing types, on all property levels, using the new Rotation option in the mark properties dialog box.
The new option is available for the following mark types:
- part marks
- neighbor partpart that is close to a part that the drawing is made for but that is not in the same assembly or cast unit
The representation of neighbor parts is usually different from that of the part.
Neighbor parts can be used as reference in dimensioning.
- bolt marks
- surface treatment marks
- connection marks
- pour objectbuilding object that is formed of one or more cast-in-place concrete parts, or a part of a cast-in-place concrete part
The cast-in-place concrete parts are merged into one pour object if they have the same material grade and pour phase, and if they touch each other. Pour objects are visible in pour view.

Level marks in GA drawings
In Tekla Structures 2017i, level marks in GA drawings show the real level of the part also in plane views (XY views). You can add a level markassociative annotation object that represents the elevation of a point
without a leader lineline that connects an annotation object to the related object or point
by selecting the new Leader line option None.
Below is an example showing concrete stairs marked with level marks in a plane viewview that displays objects two-dimensionally

- Weld marks are now be placed inside the part area regardless of the protection settings.
- Bolts are now protected on single bolt accuracy instead of bolt groupgroup of bolts that forms a connecting building object between an assembly main part and secondary parts
The number of bolts in a bolt group depends on the bolt group shape and the values of bolt distances.
Show/hide dimensions in graphical objects in drawings
Use the new Toggle graphical object dimensions command to hide the dimensions of the graphical objects in drawings: To turn the dimensions off and back on, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+d or find the command by name using the Quick Launch.
By default, the dimensions are visible.
When the dimensions are visible, a small d is displayed on the status bar:

Scale option in Text file properties
In the Text file properties dialog, the Scale settings tells how much the .rtf content should be scaled.
If you define 1 as the scale, the letters will keep the same size as the letters in the original .rtf file.
Dashed hardware line scaling
Since Tekla Structures 2017, dashed hardware lines have not been scaled by pixels, and if they were drawn in a corner, they started with a line. It has not been possible to scale dashed hardware lines to make them easier to read on the screen.

Now, these dashed hardware line types are again scaled by pixels by default, which means that they look the same in all zoom levels. By setting the new advanced option XS_SHOW_HARDWARE_DASHED_LINE_IN_PIXEL_SCALE to FALSE in the Drawing Properties category of the Advanced options dialog box you can activate the new functionality, where dashed hardware line scale is the same as in printed and exported drawings, and the dashed hardware lines work in the same way as the custom lines. The default value is TRUE. The functionality of the custom lines has not changed.
Create snapshots at drawing creation
You no longer need to open a drawing and save it to create a snapshot, now you can create a drawing snapshotimage of a drawing that shows the drawing as it was at a certain point in time
Drawing snapshots make it possible to have a quick look at any drawing without opening the drawing. Snapshots are used, for example, for finding a certain drawing edition. Snapshots can be viewed in Tekla Structures but they cannot be edited.

New warning message at section view creation
In Tekla Structures 2017i, the following warning message is displayed if you try to create a section view, and you pick a point outside a view: You cannot create a section view from outside a view.
New commands available in Project Viewer configuration
The commands Create section view , Create curved section view and Add level mark are now available in Project Viewer configuration drawings to help in studying the drawings. The changes that you make disappear when you close the drawing. You can use these commands through Quick Launch , and also create keyboard shortcuts for them.
Print preview hidden by default
The print preview is now disabled by default. You can display the print preview by clicking the preview area.
Printing errors written in a log file
All printing errors are now written to a log file in the model folderfolder that is used for storing files associated with a model
Tekla Structures stores all files associated with a model in a folder it creates with the same name as the model database (.db1).
In multi-user mode all users access the same model folder.

New way to show corrupted images in printouts
Corrupted image files in drawings are now replaced by a rectangle and cross placeholder in printouts.
PDF file names
Earlier, you could use invalid characters in PDF file names, which prevented them from printing. Now, any invalid characters are automatically replaced by underscores (_).
Printing from large models
The speed of drawing printing and PDF output is no longer affected by the size of the model, so printing is now faster with big models.
