NC Marking Lines Optimizer

This tool convert pop marks locating the holes position in secondary parts , which are marked as dots to horizontal lines & full length contour lines to corner contours . When contour markinginformation written in an NC file that passes information to the NC machine on the layout and the parts that are welded or bolted together

Tekla Structures contour marking does not work on polybeams.

and pop marks for secondary holes locations are switched on , they overlap and it's not possible to identify pop markinformation written in an NC file that sets the NC machine to drill a small hole in the surface of the material, which is used to weld or bolt assembly secondary parts to the right location on an assembly main part

. So this tool converts pop marks to horizontal lines with which secondary parts can be fixed. It also optimizes contour lines by marking only the corners instead of full length contours.

Marking lines optimizer

  • Using this tool continuous contour marking lines are converted into partial lines in order to reduce the length of the marking lines to reduce load on the NC machine.
  • Pop-marks (dot) are converted in to horizontal lines for better clarity.

How to Locate

NC Marking Lines Optimizer is available under the ‘Applications & components’ catalogue as shown below, once NC File Updater installed. Also you can find under component catalogcatalog that contains all system components and custom components, and the macros and applications

group 'NC Filefile that contains information gathered from a model and exported to computer numerical controlled fabrication machinery

Tekla Structures produces NC files in several formats, for example, DSTV.



First create NC files with required pop mark for secondary parts holes location ( 'Left side' holes, 'Right side' holes or 'Both sides' holes ) & contour marks in NC file settings dialog box .

After createing NC files double click the icon as shown in the above image. The following dialog box is displayed.

Source Directory -> Specify the source directory of the NC files created in ‘Tekla Structures’, Default is ‘Model Folder’.

Contour marking

Partial lines required Specify Contour marking continuous lines to be converted to partial lines or not?
Ignore internal hollow lines Option to ignore hollow contour. Ex. Secondary member is hollow section such as RHS profiles.  
Partial line length (TYP) Length of the each segment of the partial line.
Partial single line length Length of single line contour marking.


Bolt hole line length Length of horizontal line converted from Pop-marks.
Pop-mark location Available options are “Both sides”, “Left side” and “Right side”. Same option is to be selected from “NC Files -> Pop-Mark Settings” dialog box, used while exporting the NC Files.
Pop-mark converted to Available options are “Punch” and “Powder”.
Line Direction Pop mark line direction options are 'Horizontal' and 'Vertical'

Toggle Selection -> Toggles the cheked state of NC filed listed.

Refresh -> Refresh the NC files available in the source directory.

Destination Directory -> Specify the destination directory of the modified NC files to be created. Default is ‘<Model Folderfolder that is used for storing files associated with a model

Tekla Structures stores all files associated with a model in a folder it creates with the same name as the model database (.db1).

In multi-user mode all users access the same model folder.

Refresh -> Refresh the NC files available in the source directory.

Destination Directory -> Specify the destination directory of the modified NC files to be created. Default is ‘<Model Folder>\copied’.
