Modify a custom component

Modify a custom component

Use the custom component editortool that is used for modifying component that is created by a custom component, and for creating dependencies between component objects and other model objects

to modify and fine-tune existing custom components. When you modify a custom componentcomponent that the user creates and uses for creating model objects whose composition the user can modify as a group

, Tekla Structures updates all instances of that component throughout the model with the changes you have made.

  1. In the model, select the custom component you want to modify.
    Note:

Custom parts do not have a component symbolsymbol in a model that indicates a component type, functions as a link to component properties, and can be used to control component objects

Component symbol of a connection or a detail also indicates the status of the connection or the detail using colors.

in the model. To select custom parts, ensure that the Select components selection switchswitch used for controlling which object types can be selected

    is active.

  2. Right-click and select Edit Custom Component to open the custom component editor.

The editor consists of the following parts:

    • The Custom component browser

    • The Custom component editor toolbar

    • Four different views of the custom component

  3. Add or remove component objects. For example, you can add extra bolts or stiffeners to the component. Only the component objects, not the main or secondary parts, can be modified in the custom component editor.
  4. Change the custom component settings :
    1. In the custom component editor, click the Modify custom component settings button.

The Custom component settings dialog box opens.

    2. Modify the settings.
    3. Click OK.
  5. Add variables.
For example, you can add a distance variablevariable used to bind the model object to the object planes or construction planes

A distance variable includes a value and a dependency.

to specify the gapany space between two objects

The term gap is used in its general sense in Tekla Structures.

between a plate(1) part that represents a flat structure

    (1) In some contexts, for example in analysis, the term plate object may be used to refer to plates.

    (2) plate that represents a steel structure

    (2) Plate is mainly used as a connection piece or as a floor plate.

    and a beam.
  6. Save the custom component and click Yes when prompted to replace all occurrences of the custom component in the model. All instances of the custom component are now updated with the changes you made.
